Yakuza
Yakuza images reveal that the structures of the organizational hierarchy. Servile lackey lights a cigarette with a leader of the band posing with the self-conscious cool of a villain in Hollywood, is a human pit bull with a handkerchief tied around his melon-shaped head. Rated by striking posters in the streets covered in Japanese kanji, the backdrop shows age prostitutes, nervous men pay, and some other beaten victim: a key image, an important argument has obviously exploded in a game of Go.
"In terms of performance style suits the yakuza are not alley, but function as large corporations. Like any major business enterprise of crime groups have offices that clearly the logo of each group. Members sport lapel pins lead to the identification cards of their positions within the union. Some gangs even publish their own journals and internal telephone directories. Normal almost 9-to-5 day of a typical member of yakuza contrasts with the U.S. ethnic criminal groups, often conducting business out of the way-places and unusual hours. "Like their counterparts in the legitimate business world, the Japanese crime groups, people appear to be highly profitable. While income is difficult estimate given the covert nature of yakuza activities greatly, the NPA speculated that in 1989 Japanese organized crime groups won at least Y1.3 trillion ($ 9,600,000,000 at Y135 = $ 1.00). Of this total, the Japanese police estimate that approximately one third comes from the sale of drugs (especially amphetamines) another third comes from gambling, extortion and intervention in civil affairs and the rest comes from various activities. Like the Mafia, the Yakuza structure of power is a pyramid with a patriarch in the top and faithful subordinates of various ranks below him. The hierarchy of the Mafia is relatively simple. The capo (boss) rules of the family with assistance under your boss and consigliere (counselor). At the next level, the team captains for the implementation of the soldiers who are partners (men that have not been officially admitted to the Mafia) to do their bidding.
Yakuza system is similar but more complicated. The guiding principle of the structure is the relationship yakuza oyabun-kobun. Oyabun literally means, "The role of father"; kobun means "The role of the child." When a man is accepted into the yakuza, must accept this relationship. He must promise unconditional loyalty and obedience to their leader. The oyabun, like any good father, is obliged to provide protection and good advice their children. However, as the old Japanese saying states: "If your boss says that the crow is white passing, then you should agree." As the yakuza said a researcher, a kobun must be willing to be a teppodama (bullet) for their oyabun.
Management levels within the structure are much more complex than the yakuza mafia. Immediately under the Kumicho (paramount chief) are the comon saiko (Senior Advisor) and what is honbucho (headquarters chief). The wakagashira (number two man) is a regional leader in charge of directing the many gangs, is assisted by the fuku-honbucho, who is responsible for several bands of his own. A regional manager is a minor shateigashira, and has often a hateigashira-HOSA to assist him. Typical yakuza crime family will also have dozens of shatei (younger brothers) and many wakashu (junior leaders). A candidate successful for admission to the mafia must participate in a ceremony where the trigger finger prick and blood stained the image of a saint, which then caught fire and should begun to burn in his hands as he swears his loyalty to the family.
"The yakuza initiation ceremonies, blood is symbolized by sake (rice wine). The oyabun and launched sit face to face and sake is prepared by azukarinin (guarantors). The love is mixed with salt and fish scales, and then carefully poured into the molds. The oyabun cup is full to the brim, as befits its status, the initiate receives much less. They drink a bit, and then change cups, and each drinks from the other cup. "The kobun He has sealed his commitment to family. Since that time, even kobun wife and children should take a backseat to their obligations to his yakuza family.
The yakuza is a society of all men. They do not trust women. Women are only visible in the group is the chief wife, called BC-St. Ane-san means "big sister." All members to give the same respect as the leader because it is his wife. However, she does not engage in the business. Its position in the group is the chief wife, and not a member of a group.
The yakuza do not trust women because they believe that women are and weak. They believe that women can not fight like men, that women are born to fight. A member of the yakuza, the most important thing is courage. If there is a battle, you must be ready to fight to the death, instead of losing the battle. Yakuza members must be willing to die for their boss. They feel women are born to be mothers and care for their husbands. This may seem outdated, but all yakuza members believe that women should stay home and look after children and not meddle in men's business.
Another reason why the yakuza do not allow women in their organization is that nobody can talk on the group to outsiders. The yakuza do not think that women are strong enough to keep silent if interrogated by the police or his enemies. If someone talks, which will to the group. For all these reasons, the yakuza are the company of a man.
The yakuza have their own way of apologizing when you make a mistake or do something wrong. It's called "Yubizume." Yubizume is the act of cutting your little finger and giving it to the person they are apologizing a. The yakuza society, if one is imprisoned m ember for any reason, gains prestige when he is released from police custody
The yakuza are earning a living mainly through b illegal businesses, such as gambling, drugs, prostitution and loan-sharking. Most of the money comes from gambling, often dice games. Each group has its own room game, usually behind a bar or restaurant. Food and drinks are served, but the main purpose and is the game. The group chooses the players. If you do not know, can not play. The yakuza do not want the police to know about your business.
The yakuza also make money from prostitution. They hire young people who are under eighteen years of age. There are many ways to profit from this business, but the most popular club date. " Some groups are more than a million dollars a month from this business. The club date is a men's club. There is a fee of at least one thousand dollars to participate. Most customers are the rich middle-aged men, such as doctors, lawyers and CEOs. Club members are shown images of young women to choose from and a date with chosen girl is fixed. Then the men have to pay a fee of about two hundred dollars to date, and all expenses. After that date, the client calls to the club and they says that if she liked the girl, and if they would like another date. Having sex with the girl can cost at least a thousand dollars. The recruitment of students high school in prostitution is against the law. However, some high school students are willing to work as prostitutes because they can earn much more money than any other part-time job.
The majority of the yakuza money spent on arms purchases. Each group has its own territory. The territory is very important for the yakuza. When doing business, can not enter the territory of each other's group. If a group tries to enter the territory of another must be protected, usually through violence.
In Japan, the general public can not have a gun without permission, but the yakuza do not respect the law. Many people become victims of battle of the yakuza. When you are fighting, each group tries to kill the leader of the other group, because a group without a leader is weak and powerless to fight. For all members, the chief is God. Without it, they can not do anything. Whoever wins the battle is lost by the group and its territory.
It is easy to see why the yakuza are so famous in many countries, and feared and hated by many people. The yakuza do not follow the law. They also have illegal businesses, and have had many battles that have killed innocent citizens. This follows being one of the biggest social problems in Japan.
If a yakuza member displeases or severely disappoints his boss, the punishment is often yubizume, amputation of the last pinky toe joint. A second offense will require the cutting of the second joint of the finger, and other crimes may require moving to the next finger. A man knows he must commit yubizume when their supervisor gives you a knife and a chain to stop the bleeding. Words are not necessary. The origin of this practice goes back to the era of the samurai. Removing part of the weak little hand to hold the sword. When a katana (long sword of the samurai) grabs correctly, the pinky is the strongest finger. The ring finger is the second strongest, stronger middle third finger and index finger does almost nothing. With damaged hand, the swordsman became more dependent on his master for protection. Today this is totally symbolic ritual mutilation, but it serves to kobun make a point with the offender, and shows that the yakuza, like their counterparts in the Mafia, meet the old adage: "Keep your friends close and your enemies closely. "
Like the Mafia, the Yakuza in recent years have been forced to reduce its standards in recruiting new members, and as a result some feel they are not as organized or as powerful as they once were. In the past, recruits came from the traditional choice bakuto (player) and tekiya (seller mobile) classes, but now a rebellious spirit and willingness to commit a crime for a oyabun is all that is needed to join the ranks yakuza. Most new members now come from the bosozuku (speed tribes), street punks known for his love of motorcycles.
This decline in standards has led to the Japanese Agency National Police boryokudan the adoption of the term (the violent ()) for the yakuza, putting them in with other criminal groups. The yakuza, who treasure their ancestral ties the old samurai reject the term and consider it an insult.
The origin of the yakuza is a matter of debate. Some feel that its members are descendants of the 17th century kabuki-mono (the crazy), Samurai who delighted in extravagant clothes and extravagant hairstyles, speak in slang developed, and carried unusually long swords at the waist. The kabuki-mono was also known as hatamoto-yakko (servants of the shogun). During the Tokugawa period, a long period of peace in Japan, the services of these samurai were no longer needed, and what became leaderless ronin (wave men). Without the guidance of a strong hand, eventually shifted his focus from community service with the robbery and chaos.
Modern yakuza members refute this theory and instead proclaim themselves to be descendents of the machi-yokko (city officials) who protected their villages from the wayward-yakko hatamoto. The official yakuza history portrays the ancestors of the weaker group as folk heroes who stood up for the poor and helpless, like Robin Hood helped the peasants of medieval England.
Current members of the yakuza are divided into three general categories: tekiya (street vendors), bakuto (players), and gurentai (Thugs). Vendors and Players trace their roots back to the 18th century while the hoodlums came into existence after the Second World War when the demand for goods black market created a booming industry. Traditionally, the tekiya, Japan's medieval version of snake oil salesmen, worked the fairs and markets, while bakuto worked the cities and roads. The gurentai, by contrast, is inspired by American gangsters of the era of Al Capone, with threats and extortion to achieve their ends. After the Second World War, the governmental power void caused by the occupation, the gurentai prospered, and their ranks swelled. Also led to the organized crime in Japan to a new level of violence in place of the traditional sword with modern firearms, even though the weapons were now officially out of law in the country as a result of the waiver.
Yakuza also satisfy the desire of would-be gun owners in Japan, where the weapons of all kinds are prohibited. Yakuza members themselves are the main market for firearms, and favor the smartest automatic guns in Europe and America, often drug trade for weapons. The yakuza are specialized in the production and sale of amphetamines met (given the frenetic pace of Japan's competitive environment the company, the speed is national drug of choice) and the yakuza often use it to barter with Western arms suppliers.
The yakuza also make millions of dollars a year through extortion of businesses and sokaiya (shareholders' meeting for men) are the owners of this company. Sokaiya buy a small number of shares in a company to attend the shareholders meetings. In preparation for the meeting, the sokaiya gather damaging information about the company and its officers, secret lovers, tax evasion, unsafe factory conditions, and pollution are fodder for the sokaiya. Then will contact address of the company and threaten to reveal all information that is embarrassing to the shareholders' meeting unless they are "compensated." If management not to yield to their demands, the sokaiya go to the shareholders meeting and raise hell, yelling at anyone who dares to talk, boasting of its boisterous presence, and shouting his revelations harmful. In Japan, where people fear the shame and guilt much more than physical threats, executives usually give sokaiya what they want.
groups of organized crime in Japan - commonly known as yakuza - in recent years have proven to be much more than gangs of thugs who oversee extortion gambling, prostitution and other "traditional" gangster. The developments during the past year have revealed that the yakuza, having real estate and securities purchased in the late 1980s, is playing a larger hand in the Japanese economy. While organized crime groups for much the postwar period enjoyed an unusual degree of tolerance on the part of the Japanese public and the police, the recent scandals involving thousands millions of yen related to companies or individuals related yakuza have sounded the alarm in Tokyo. There is a growing concern in some quarters of government business and the underworld Japan is developing the kind of financial muscle that could threaten the economic order.
"The exotic aspect of the members of the yakuza and their peculiar type samurai ritual (the upper part of a gang member's smallest digit is cut and delivered to their leader to atone for a mistake) certainly distinguish Japanese mafia underworld syndicates based in the United States and Europe. The yakuza in recent years has diversified its portfolio to illegal activities include usury, blackmail and extortion by such company intervention in civil disputes and real property transactions. "
"It is possible purchases of the image of Robin Hood of the yakuza, ordinary Japanese citizens sometimes do not turn to lawyers and courts but to help them resolve mafia civil disputes it would be extremely difficult, time consuming and expensive to pursue through the Japanese legal system. These disputes relate primarily to private and commercial debts and personal injuries, but experts also believe that organized crime that the Mafia is involved in the settlement of most cases of car accident. While the yakuza in these cases can be considered as covering a need created by a shortage of lawyers in Japan, gangsters - outlawed - have also met to initiate traffic accidents as a means of extorting money from people. "
The reasons for the yakuza are rarely above reproach. It could be argue that gangsters, in fact, have learned to exploit the Japanese tendency to use personal relationships, rather than legal measures to resolve disputes.
This not to say that the Japanese police completely blind eye when it comes to the Mafia. During the Japanese law enforcement officials, who have been admired the world over for its high level of discipline, have conducted numerous raids on several offices yakuza. These assaults have tended, however, be more a show of police muscle that a genuine attempt to stop gangster operations.
One of the main reasons that the yakuza can operate "on the ground" is that the groups are not illegal. There are no laws in Japan Racketeer Influenced comparable to that of this country and Corrupt Organisations Act 1970. United RICO authorizes law enforcement to investigate and ultimately instance, to arrest any person, partnership, corporation, association or other legal entity and any union or group of individuals "associated in fact "for engaging in a pattern of criminal activity in response to organized crime. Organized crime experts also point to deficiencies criminal law in Japan have also made it difficult to prosecute perpetrators of bribery, extortion, money laundering or other lines of business yakuza.
Public acceptance - Until recently there has been an unusually high degree of tolerance by the Japanese public by the yakuza. While mob was not too harmful, the police, in particular, remained out of their way. Some analysts attribute this acceptance to the ability of the yakuza in public relations and the fact that the public has come to rely on gangsters to meet certain economic, political, legal and social that the government can not or not management.
