U.S. Mail Makes History

Delivery of hundreds of millions of messages per day to more than 141 million U.S. homes and businesses is no small thing. Monitoring of developments in the United States Postal Service is a journey into the history of transportation, economics, industrialization, communications and government.

With an act of the Second Continental Congress in 1775, the birth of the Post Office Department, the predecessor to the U.S. Postal Service, was put in place. According to the act of Congress "A line of posts [] must be appointed under the direction of Postmaster General, of Falmouth in New England to Savannah, Georgia, with so many posts cross as it deems appropriate. "

At that time, the postal system mainly carried communications between Congress and the armies under the leadership Benjamin Franklin the first Postmaster General. From the foundation he created the system that has continued to meet the needs of the American people since its inception. According to the United States Postal Service, Franklin began a long tour to inspect post offices in the north and as far away as Virginia. New and shorter routes mail were presented and the landmarks were placed on major roads. Post drivers email published for the first time in the evening at the speed of service between Philadelphia and New York. Upon leaving office, post roads were operating from Maine to Florida and New York to Canada.

When Washington DC became the seat of government the post office was moved there from Philadelphia. Two horse-drawn wagons carried all postal records, furniture and supplies to the capital again. During the 19th century, the Post Office made great strides in developing new services that have lasted into the 21st century and contribute to the development of all forms of transport important.

Steamboats began traveling the rivers, in replacement of boats, rowboats and rafts as a means to carry the mail. In the West was by behind the rest of the country in receiving your mail, the Pony Express was established and started its operation in 1860. The fastest delivery was in March 1861 when the inaugural address of President Abraham Lincoln was carried from San Jose to Sacramento in seven days and 17 hours.

The first U.S. railroad route the post office was established in 1864 between Chicago and Clinton, Iowa in the Chicago and North Western Railway. Terminals were established along the major railway stations to allow parcels be ordered in the mail room and loading on cars-mail. In 1930, more than 10,000 trains moved the mail. And although there was a decrease in the use of rail for deliver mail, the nation's freight railroads continue to carry mail through its intermodal service today.

In early 1900, Post Office authorized experimental flights at fairs, carnivals, and the air meets in more than 16 states. These flights convinced the Post Office that the plane could carry a payload of mail. In 1918, the Post Office started a regular airmail service between New York and Washington, DC to military personnel flying Army aircraft. In 1918, the Post Office took over all phases of its airmail service. The first air commercial flight took place in 1926.

For all their progress through the decades, the Post Office almost stalled in the mid-1960s. Years of financial neglect and control over the elements fragmented as equipment and salaries created a crisis. In Chicago, 10 million pieces of mail are logjammed. The mailroom floors are filled with millions of letters, packages, circulars, and magazines that can not be processed. Years of neglect, finally added up. In response, Congress created a postal reform, better wages, better benefits, workforce and gave the postmaster more control, to name a few.

Like letters represent as much volume of mail, the postal service new equipment and technology in the 1990s to accelerate the process of the letter. He also began to automate the processing of catalogs, magazines, envelopes and other large. It has also turned its attention to speeding up the plots. His ultimate goal is to provide customers with more information on each mailpiece as it travels through the system. The goal is to have an intelligent mail system in 2009, operating as a global positioning system for mail, using a standard bar code on each piece of email and the recipient, allowing customers to view your mail is every step of the road.
