Everything you need from me is: Job Interview Preparation and Interview Tips

Bill, a high tech recruiter, and I were talking about our experiences from interviews he had conducted in recent years. Of course, we start with a few laughs at worst interviews. I feel compelled to share only two of them that are fun.

One respondent took notes in his statement because he forgot a piece of paper (or perhaps trying to tell him I really needed the work).

One interviewee came with white socks and tennis shoes with a black suit. Not the worst, but when you are interviewing for a position in public presentations are part of the work, this is not your best foot forward.

Each of these candidates were not adequately prepared. If had followed some simple steps for the preparation of the interview, which would perform much better.

Later he started talking about a place in particular we struggled to fill. After many interviews with several candidates, just felt everyone was the same and, unfortunately, nobody had impressed any of us. While everyone had the right skills, simply did not differentiate or distinguish themselves from others. As you review all candidates the interviewing team had similar comments: I could recite their experiences such as reading an encyclopedia, but that was it.

We were talking about our experience of the interviewed large, how they sell, and how it differs from other candidates. Here is an abbreviated version of our conversation.

Start with one strategy to differentiate yourself. Great interviews begin title = "Interview Preparation"> interview preparation including its strategy of differentiation. Look at their experience, knowledge, education, connections, which is to be distinguished. Think about what the interviewer wants to hear: they want someone who can believe, hope and promote. When you are different, giving them reason to believe in you.

Do not generalize or try to be a Swiss Army knife. This is the most common mistake of all interview preparation. This often leads to boring interviews or for worse this leads oversold and questions of credibility. Often I have to comment to myself "if you have done all these things so well, why do interviews for this position? You should have my job or my boss' job. "

Telling a story and be specific. Being given more specific information to convey, a story that help make it stick, and something the interviewer to participate. To prepare for an interview, has to be thinking about the story that will sell. Here is an example. I recently interviewed marketing writers. Compare these two responses when I asked about your work history:

Interviewee # 1: I have worked for many leading companies in Silicon Valley, as A, B and C. I have experience product specifications, product documentation, sales presentation, press releases, product training and marketing material. I've done successfully for the last 10 years. In company A, I did X, Y, Z.

Interviewee # 2: I have 10 years of experience in building material marketing. My biggest success was the latest when we wanted to improve our knowledge on the market. We sold safety equipment. Most customers who bought our products on a calendar and security problems is not a principle of mind issue. To help generate more interest, wanted to use the main publications in our market to help us with our sales efforts. My boss hated the idea because hum do about negative security implications. Nobody wants to buy the company saying there is a security problem. On the contrary, I felt I had to concentrate on sales people. I still thought this was a good idea, so I started to be included in three of the five major publications in our market with the approval of my boss. I have focused on current health care costs and related market our products security to reduce healthcare costs. The sales team loved the materials as they may relate to them and so could your customers. I contacted publications inquire about items related to safety and health costs. In our discussions, they learned what we were doing and wrote articles about us. In the end, I surpassed my goal with four of the five publications written about us and the sales team went crazy to get the items so your customers can read about us.

Hopefully, this helps guide how the focus of the interview. Remember, you need more striking. Most interviews are a blur. In preparing for an interview, create a story or something that people will remember you for what amounts to the top of the list.
