James Cameron's Avatar: The Game
While Cameron Jame's spent most of the last two decades working on his next work magna, Ubisoft Montreal decided to team up with Lightstorm Entertainment and 3D stereo lead to the small screen. Unfortunately, not having access to a screen that is capable of 3D graphics offer meant that the experience of Avatar game was not very different from any other third person shooter. One thing I seemed to have worked for this game is the decision to develop the game regardless of the history of cinema. Of course, the game is set in the world like the film and at least one pair of characters of the film in his role in this game. However, the game's story does not follow the exploits of Jake Sully of the film, it explores the strange world Pandora by the prospect of working code breaker for a private mining company, the GDR.
The game kicks-off with the introduction of Alien moon Pandora and puts you in control of the game's protagonist named Lance Corporal "Able" Ryder. After a brief departure in the surrounding lands, the game takes when Able Rider starts in the online program.
Let me take a little detour and read through the line premise. After have discovered a strange world, humans begin aggressively mining the moon for a mineral called Unobtanium, paid a price back home safe. Without However, Pandora has more than mineral deposits, the Moon is lush with dense vegetation, sensitive plants, animals and even intelligent beings called Na'vi. Even in the next millennium, humans have not given up the idea that asking someone to either give up their freedom will work. So to facilitate diplomacy between Na'vi humans and humans start the program online. This allows humans to remotely control the hybrid s Na'vi man are "created" by human scientists. Understandably, the Na'vi not a big fan of the program and the relationship between the two species is tenuous to begin with.
But these things have always failed to curb the spirit of man to the conflict and thus, although all those millions of miles away what we have is the well known Pandora conflicts over resources and territory.
Back to the game: very early in the plot, the story splits in two. After the very clear intention and RDA becomes even more apparent, Ryder Able to get the option to continue or with the RDA or defect and join the forces of indigenous resistance. Regardless of what side you choose, they share a common goal to locate and activate something called as Well of Souls. The use of this allows control of the communication and subsequently, the entire ecosystem. The Na'vi believe that life moon system is controlled by a single being aware that they refer to as Eywa. So if you Na'vi choose to play as a mercenary or GDR, the main goal of the game is to locate and activate the Well of Souls and then use their powers against their enemies.
A Despite following the same plot, this choice the game offers an incentive to win the game twice. Siding with one faction or another, the game still maintaining elements common design and the skills, weapons and combat systems. There subtle differences with guns and mounts, and at least one skill that is unique to a particular species. Strangely, despite these similarities and the establishment of Na'vi apparently higher, the RDA still come out as the stronger of the two sides. After to play the single player campaign with both species, I found that playing as the Na'vi has a steep learning curve to the end, the fight is far more difficult.
Towards the destruction of their enemies, the game offers an assortment of weapons Na'vi that predate history home again. As Na'vi the game gives you access to melee weapons such as batons, axes and shovels double and ranged weapons like bows and crossbows. Just to keep things a bit more respectable, too can carry a piece of human technology in the form of a machine gun. Playing as an agent RDA, you will have access to a decent collection of weapons. Surprisingly, human weapons technology "has not changed much in over a thousand years and the arsenal is a disappointing collection of guns, machine guns, shotguns and flamethrowers. The game could have been much more fun to use vehicles (or fixtures) in the game, especially the RDA vehicles. Unfortunately, the abysmal flight game the vehicle control system sucks all the fun and I had started to play sequences of terror in which they were forced to use one of these.
Provide an additional layer of combat system the game is the skill system. Each of the two species have access to a set of skills that can be a lifesaver in the field battle. Now, although there are differences that covers the skills available to both factions, most of them perform the same functions.
Armas Skills updated armor and are awarded each time your character levels up. Experience points can be earned by killing enemies, completing primary and secondary objectives, or by collecting Additional information on the habitat.
If the combat system the game looks like a boring experience, the narration does not help elevate the game from mediocrity. By today's standards, the voice acting is very weak and character animation in cutscenes seems to be nailed. So the game world is not openly imaginative as the landscape of Pandora looks like a spin-off of the Amazon rainforest. Culturally, race-Na'vi comes as a mix of elves and indigenous African tribes. Even stories like this about the situation of human aggression Na'vi and can be found in numerous volumes in libraries worldwide, as both fiction and historical documentation. Perhaps the aim of the film is to offer a visual delight and boring story is simply an excuse to do just that. Unfortunately with the game, looks is not as effective to compensate the weakness of game-play, and it can be to compensate for the weak plot in a movie.
Providing a break from the monotony of what is primarily a combat system is another point and shoot game mode called Conquest. It is actually a built-in mini-game that can be triggered from certain points in the main game. Conquest plays in a war room like interface with a 3-D design of Pandora, together with the position of enemy and friendly troops. The aim is to expand its control over the features of the moon with the capture of enemy territory, while at the same time, defend and strengthen territories under their control. This mode is also linked well with the regular game-play specific capture enemy territories reward the player with different bonuses to defense and attack capabilities. At the same time, gaining experience points in a single player mode to add credits in Conquest mode. Credits can be used to recruit additional forces or to reinforce the defenses of a territory.
Avatar Game also features multiplayer support with traditional modes of play like capture the flag, King of the Hill and Team Deathmatch. Logging into servers game requires a registered account with Ubisoft, along with the product key of the game. After logging in, however, was very rare to find someone to match. Even using the Server service matchmaking to join an existing party results rarely rose. The best I could find, after several attempts at different times of day, was on the advisory panel with no more than four players who populate a relatively large map.
The game is still an effort commendable, as it tries to give the player a lot of options. However, apart from the mechanics are tired of a typical third-person shooter and is too cautious approach to an ordinary game. I was actually expecting a lot worse than this game given the stigma that tends to a have against the movie based on games. Would Ubisoft really nice to see Montreal (Or any other studio) back to the world of Avatar. Only the next time would be good to see them approach the game with much less conservatism creative and a lot of glaze to smooth the rough edges.
